New Japan Cup night 3 (March 8) Preview

Yamanashi sees third night of tournament action

After kicking off in Tokyo, the New Japan Cup tour heads to Yamanashi for night three, where a bracket full of intrigue will see three more advance to the sweet sixteen.
Watch LIVE in English on NJPW World!

Main event- New Japan Cup 1st Round- Shingo Takagi vs Yuya Uemura
Singles record: 1-0 Takagi

0308_8.jpg

Winner faces Callum Newman or Gabe Kidd March 13 in Okayama
Yuya Uemura’s first singles match since losing his Hair versus Hair battle with Yota Tsuji in Sapporo sees him battle one of his last opponents pre-excursion in Shingo Takagi, and his first singles bout against someone other than Tsuji since returning from the US last autumn. It will be with a fresh set of circumstances and a fresh look then that he faces Takagi, who on home turf in Yamanashi will be looking to better his performance this time last year, where he was beaten in front of his home crowd by HENARE. Shingo and Uemura both are in need of big results, but only one can advance in what’s sure to be a heated main event tonight.

7th Match: New Japan Cup 1st Round- Callum Newman vs Gabe Kidd
Singles record: 1-0 Kidd

0308_7.jpg

Winner faces Shingo Takagi or Yuya Uemura March 13 in Okayama
A battle of Britain pits bright young prospects for United Empire and the War Dogs opposite one another, Callum Newman facing off against Gabe Kidd. Newman’s blistering pace and hard fighting attitude has won him the hearts of fans of late, and he hopes to bring recently gained momentum and attention with him to Ymaanashi where he faces the War Ready Kidd. Gabe is wrestling his first bout since the infamous Osaka Dog Pound Steel Cage match that left multiple members on the shelf, and with his typical fast temper, may lack the focus needed in a singles elimination tournament. Could Kidd be prime for an upset in the biggest opportunity of Newman’s career?

6th Match: New Japan Cup 1st Round- Hikuleo vs Boltin Oleg
0308_6.jpg

Winner faces EVIL March 13 in Okayama
A clash of titans will see Hikuleo face Boltin Oleg in the first round of the Cup. Hikuleo had a bittersweet New Beginning series, losing the IWGP Tag Championships to KENTA and Chase Owens, but getting recognition from his bigger brother Tama Tonga in Tama’s last match in Sapporo. He hopes to carry that forward momentum through to a strong run in the tournament, but starts with tough competition. Boltin has made great strides of late, and a big win could be all it takes for the Kazakh amateur standout to be rocketed to the front. Will tonight be the night?

5th Match: Los Ingobernables De Japon (BUSHI, Hiromu Takahashi, Yota Tsuji & Tetsuya Naito) vs United Empire (Jeff Cobb, Great-O-Khan, TJP & Francesco Akira)

9_12-1.jpg

Yota Tsuji’s New Japan Cup starts Sunday where he’ll be in a hard fought battle against United Empire’s Jeff Cobb. Tsuji has pledged a New Japan Cup win and a Ryogoku main event opposite Tetsuya Naito; tonight the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion is alongside someone who could be his opponent April 6, if he isn’t put out by the Imperial Unit beforehand.

4th Match: Just Five Guys (DOUKI, Taichi & SANADA) vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (Ren Narita, Yoshinobu Kanemaru & Yujiro Takahashi)

8_12-2.jpg

Taichi is heading into the New Japan Cup with hopes high that he can face former Dangerous Tekkers tag team partner Zack Sabre Jr. in the second round. To do that though, he will have to get past Ren Narita Sunday in Hyogo, who will likely be pulling extensively from the HOUSE OF TORTURE playbook. This preview tag will see Taichi putting together some much needed countermeasures no doubt.

3rd Match: YOH, El Desperado & Shota Umino vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (SHO, Dick Togo & EVIL)

2_8-1.jpg

With a lot of bitterness remaining from Sapporo title defeats, Shota Umino and El Desperado have sizable bones to pick with EVIL and SHO tonight. Will they be able to get some measure of satisfaction in Yamanashi?

2nd Match: Tomoaki Honma & El Phantasmo vs TMDK (Mikey Nicholls & Zack Sabre Jr.)

5_11-10.jpg

El Phantasmo and Mikey Nicholls will lock horns ahead of Sunday’s first round Cup clash in the second match of the night. There’s every chance Zack Sabre Jr. will be facing one or the other in the elite eight, and will be keeping a keen and active watching brief tonight.

1st Match: Ryusuke Taguchi, YOSHI-HASHI, Tomohiro Ishii & Hirooki Goto vs BULLET CLUB (Gedo, Chase Owens, KENTA & David Finlay)
crs_469344_12.jpg

After KENTA and Chase Owens captured the IWGP Tag Team Championships in Osaka, YOSHI-HASHI faced KENTA in the first round in Ota Wednesday, and Owens battled Ishii Thursday in Korakuen with Goto next for the winner, Bishamon and BULLET CLUB connections make this eight man second round preview one to watch as action kicks off in Yamanashi.

New Japan Cup night 4 (March 10) Preview

Hyogo sees end of first round

At the end of a rollercoaster first week for the New Japan Cup, Hyogo will see the end of round one March 10. The field of 16 will now be complete for round two, as six men vie to join first round bye Zack Sabre Jr.

Main event: New Japan Cup 1st Round- Yota Tsuji vs Jeff Cobb
20240310_NJC_08.jpg

Winner faces El Phantasmo or Mikey Nicholls March 15 in Osaka
A first time ever singles encounter pits Yota Tsuji against jeff Cobb in first round action. In the wake of TJP and Great-O-Khan’s first round exits, it’s been a difficult week for the United Empire, and there’s a chance for Cobb to recover on behalf of his faction tonight. Yet opposite him is one of the pre-tournament favourites in Tsuji, one who is driven to battle his faction leader Tetsuya Naito for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.
Motivations are high, and so to is fan anticipation for what is stylistically an incredible main event on paper. The two men’s natural size and strength are matched with incredible athleticism and explosivity, and this is a big time battle that’s a big time treat for the crowd in Kobe.

7th Match: New Japan Cup 1st Round- Taichi vs Ren Narita
20240310_NJC_07.jpg

Winner faces Zack Sabre Jr. March 15 in Osaka
Another first time ever contest pits Taichi opposite Ren Narita. Taichi had a lot of previous with HOUSE OF TORTURE members at the end of 2023, but this will be his first time opposite Narita in a singles environment. The question is just how long the environment will remain a singles one, and how will Taichi deal with the numbers game when the situation arises. Zack Sabre Jr. awaits in the second round for one of these men, and with Taichi wanting to face his former championship tag partner and Narita hungry for revenge over a World TV title loss at last year’s Wrestle Kingdom, motivation will be high in what’s set to be a chaotic collision.

6th Match: New Japan Cup 1st Round- El Phantasmo vs Mikey Nicholls
20240310_NJC_06.jpg

Winner faces Yota Tsuji or Shingo Takagi March 15 in Osaka
Kicking off tournament action for the night will be Mikey Nicholls and El Phantasmo. Former IWGP and current NJPW STRONG Openweight Tag Team Champion Phantasmo might have been focused on his team with Hikuleo over the last six months to great success, but his singles track record, including in the single elimination tournament format of back to back Super J-Cups in 2019 and 2020, is definitely present. Mikey Nicholls, long held a tag team specialist with Shane Haste, has his own hard hitting singles potential waiting to be shown in the Cup. Will it manifest itself in a first round victory tonight?

5th Match: Los Ingobernables De Japon (BUSHI, Hiromu Takahashi, SHingo Takagi & Tetsuya Naito) vs United Empire (Great-O-Khan, TJP, Francesco Akira & Callum Newman)
20240310_NJC_05.jpg

After a challenging first week of the Cup for the United Empire, its members will be offering their own support to Jeff Cobb with a hopeful victory against Yota Tsuji’s LIJ teammates tonight. Will this eight man tag be a sign of singles success to come in the main event?

4th Match: Boltin Oleg, SHota Umino, El Desperado & YOH vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (EVIL, Yujiro Takahashi, SHO & Yoshinobu Kanemaru)
20240310_NJC_04.jpg

Shota Umino and El Desperado’s continued anger at HOUSE OF TORTURE manifests itself once again in eight man action tonight, while YOH continues to push the buttons of SHO- that is if his ‘severe physical and emotional trauma at the hands of Tetsuya Naito’ doesn’t prevent him from wrestling once again. After first stealing the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship belt, and then teasing the champion with a suspicious bag that ultimately only contained SHO’s old Roppongi 3K jacket, YOH seems to live rent free in what remains of SHO’s mind. What happens next between the two in Kobe?

3rd Match: Guerrillas of Destiny (Tanga Loa, Hikuleo & Jado) vs BULLET CLUB War Dogs (David Finlay, Gabe Kidd & Gedo))
20240310_NJC_03.jpg

Six man action sees a preview of the second round Cup contest for surprise advance Tanga Loa and bracket favourite David Finlay. As GoD and BULLET CLUB continue to collide, it’s a rare chance for the big little brother of the Tongan clan Hikuleo to team with Tanga Loa, while former business ‘brothers’ Jado and Gedo lock horns once more.

2nd Match: Ryusuke Taguchi, Toru Yano & Tomohiro Ishii vs Just Five Guys (SANADA, DOUKI & Yuya Uemura)
20240310_NJC_02.jpg

More trios action pits the strong and the strange of Ishii, Yano and Taguchi against three of Just Five Guys. SANADA vs Yano is still a potential quarterfinal matchup in the upper left bracket, and this match could be a sign of things to come.

1st Match: Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI & Tomoaki Honma vs BULLET CLUB (KENTA, Chase Owens & Taiji Ishimori)
20240310_NJC_01.jpg

Trios action will kick us off in Yamanashi. After YOSHI-HASHI eliminated KENTA from the New Japan Cup, Hirooki Goto will look to do the same to Chase Owens when they meet in their second round matchup in a couple of days time. Now it’s as teams that Bishamon and Honma face the IWGP Tag team Champions and the man who helped them to the gold in Taiji Ishimori.

I have changed my mind the scapeGOAT has spoken

Funny his words has no value to me after he's gone in a few Months. I said my thoughts in the Anniversary Show that unless Perry wins the NJ Cup and beats Naito to give it to Umino their was no reason why he should of won over Shota when he could most likely lose to Sanada after that Cake Walk of a Match he'll have with Yano. I'm about to watch Day 1 but I think New Japan thinks House of Torture is some kind of great group when none of them are workers at all. I think people would deal with them as a group if they would actually give us watchable Matches and it's the opposite majority of the time in my opinion.

Yesterday I had to Manually resynch the File to fix the Audio/Video with the Show hopefully this File is not the Case I'm too tired to do that again.

I wonder how old Jado is because he puts to shame guys half his age no way in better shape than him.

The New Japan people are really taking to Oleg during this Tour I must say. Does he speak English because it seems like all he needs is experience because the fans already love him before he truly has made a statement as a talent being a Young Lion.

Pretty sure Jado is in his 50s
