WWE taped matches for a new concept at Friday’s Smackdown taping, titled “WWE Speed.” Fightful Select reports that Axiom battled Cedric Alexander and Nathan Frazer took on Bronson Reed in a match before Smackdown under the new concept, which is a point-based bout with a five-minute time limit. Reed won his match; no word on who won between Axiom and Alexander. The matches were filmed as if they were to be broadcast and a WWE Speed logo was on the side of the ring, though no word on when or how that may happen.

PWInsider reports that the notion is to have talents compete against a clock and each other, with the clock counting down on the screen. Winners get a point and losers lose a point, with no point awarded in the case of a tie.

So... they basically wanna make a whole thing out of those shitty and completely pointless 2-3 minute long matches that were happening on a regular basis on Nitro and RAW during the Monday Night Wars, when they only just went towards longer TV matches over the last 5-6 years to put more emphasis on in-ring work, which had been one of the most positively received changes overall?

I mean, yea, it's apparently something not intended to be a part of RAW or SD, probably gonna be Network exclusive or something like that, but still... with only a 5 minute time limit, I don't see this being an actual good idea. It basically works completely against what they are going for in the Main Shows and can hurt the talent, that appears on both.

Storm Trooper

If I can be Storm Trooper for a Minute
So a typical WWE Dark Match before Raw/Smackdown is a 4-5 minute nothing match. Now they're trying something to make these nothing matches something interesting? I'm not at all complaining.

As noted, WWE began taping matches for a new program they are shopping around called WWE Speed, which features a special countdown clock on the big screen during matches taped before RAW and SmackDown shows.

In an update, Fightful Select is reporting that virtually no one behind-the-scenes at the recent WWE Friday Night SmackDown taping where the concept debuted were aware of the plans for it until literally right before the taping began.

Additionally, it’s being reported that WWE’s plan for the show is to run it on various social media platforms if and when they officially launch it.
Makes sense why they're so short then if it's aimed for social media
