Ah shit. That unfortunate for Darnold having to be carted off. I hope his injuries isn't too serious.

Geno Smith gets nod as Seattle Seahawks' starting QB for Week 1 vs. Denver Broncos

ESPN

The Seattle Seahawks have decided which quarterback will face their former one when Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos come to Lumen Field for the Monday night opener Sept. 12.

Yes, Geno Smith is an NFL starter once again.

Coach Pete Carroll made the announcement Friday night, calling Seattle's quarterback battle in favor of Smith over Drew Lock after the Seahawks closed out their preseason with a 27-26 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He told the team in the locker room then relayed his decision to reporters.

"He's going to start the opener," Carroll said. "He's earned it. He won the job."

All along, Carroll has said that Smith has been ahead of Lock, noting several times how Wilson's former backup has had the edge in terms of his understanding of coordinator Shane Waldron's offense. Lock was already in catch-up mode when he missed the second preseason game with COVID-19, then he turned in an uneven performance against Dallas with a perfect touchdown pass but also three interceptions, two of which weren't entirely his fault.

Asked about his decision to go with Smith, Carroll said the 10th-year veteran kept earning the right to remain in the lead.

"We really put him up against the competition, and Drew took his shot at him all the way throughout," Carroll said. "Those guys ... they have gotten along beautifully, they've supported one another throughout. They really couldn't have done that better and in more classy, great competitor fashion. They know that they need each other and all that, and they did it right.

"But Geno, he knows our stuff and he does really well and he understands it and he can manage everything that we're doing and he's good about the football. He'll give us the best chance to play great football right off the bat."

For Lock, it's the second straight summer in which he has lost a quarterback battle.

For Smith, it's another shot at being a QB1 after his early-career struggles -- as well as an infamous locker room incident in which his jaw was broken by a sucker punch -- relegated him to backup status for most of the past seven seasons.

"It means a lot," Smith said. "I'm pretty sure it's something I've been preparing for, and the reality is that it's just Step 1. It's just the beginning. I've got to make sure that I'm ready to go out there and win and play 17 games and more. For me, I'm grateful. I'm thankful. I'm forever indebted to the Seattle Seahawks organization, but it's time to get to work."

Smith signed with Seattle in 2019, backed up Wilson for three seasons and re-signed in April on a one-year, $3.5 million deal. He has a 13-21 career record as a starter, including a 12-18 mark during his four seasons with the New York Jets, who drafted him in the second round in 2013. Smith went 1-2 last season while Wilson was out with a finger injury.

He took the vast majority of the first-team reps during the offseason program and training camp then started Seattle's mock game and all three preseason games. Lock was set to start the second preseason game and took all the No. 1 reps in practice on Tuesday of that week only to test positive for COVID-19 that afternoon, sidelining him against the Chicago Bears two days later.

Carroll previously implied that the time Lock missed with COVID-19 had pushed back his timetable on naming a starter and that he would take all the time he needed with two-and-a-half weeks left before the opener. But during Friday's postgame media session, Carroll said he was "clear" about his decision to go with Smith and that Lock "just ran out time" after the week he missed.

"He can play," Carroll of Lock, a second-round pick by Denver in 2019. "I don't have any question that he can play. I really don't. He's got all the athleticism. He's got the arm strength. He's got arm talent. He's got a creativity about him. All of that. I think he's going to be a fantastic football player soon, so it's just a matter of he just didn't quite have enough time to beat out a guy who knew exactly what he was doing and who just stayed at it and really just won the job because of his consistency and really his performance."

Smith and Lock have both said they would have the other's back no matter how the competition shakes out, something Lock reiterated after Carroll's announcement. Lock said he learned how to handle losing a quarterback battle after Teddy Bridgewater beat him out last summer in Denver and vowed to be ready for any chance he gets.

"As a competitor, you're always disappointed, and I was disappointed," Lock said of his reaction. "You want to be out there. You want to be playing with those guys. You want to be able to step on the field and show what you can do, and you're disappointed. But now it's my job to have his back and be the best teammate I can be and come out every day and find ways to make this team better and to make myself better."

Lock, acquired from Denver in the Wilson trade, outproduced Smith in one fewer game this summer but also committed more mistakes. His biggest one happened late in the preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, when he failed to adjust to an unblocked rusher who came off the edge and hit him from behind, causing a fumble that the defense recovered and costing Seattle a chance at a tying or go-ahead touchdown drive.

Between the Seahawks' mock game at Lumen Field and his two preseason games, Lock completed 42 of 66 passes (64%) for 458 yards, 4 touchdowns, 3 interceptions and a lost fumble.

In all four games, Smith went 33-of-58 (57%) for 350 yards with no turnovers. He also ran for a touchdown.

Smith went 3-of-6 for 43 yards and led a field goal drive on his lone possession Friday. Lock took over and played well into the fourth quarter, finishing 13-of-24 for 171 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. On the first interception, Dee Eskridge appeared to not work back to the football. The third one bounced off Aaron Fuller's chest and right to a Dallas defender.

"I think there's three throws I definitely want back," Lock said. "I think there's a lot of good plays on tape too, though. Learn from those bad ones. Just take care of the football."

Lock said his recent bout with COVID-19 "kind of kicked my butt a little bit," calling it an interesting experience because he felt nothing more than a headache when he had it last time. On the day he tested positive, Aug. 16, Lock struggled noticeably in practice and felt too sick to take part in any post-practice work. He said Friday that COVID-19 wasn't an excuse for how he played against Dallas, but he acknowledged that missing the Chicago game last week was a setback.

"Obviously I was very disappointed that I didn't get to play that game," he said. "But I came out, practiced this week, got better and had an opportunity tonight."

Smith said he has "turned the corner" in terms of taking better care of the ball, an issue early in his career. He was set to return for a third season as the Jets' starter in 2015 before teammate IK Enemkpali broke his jaw during a fight in the locker room. He left the Jets after the 2016 season then started only four games over the next five seasons while backing up three of the most durable quarterbacks in NFL history: Eli Manning, Philip Rivers and Wilson.

"I've always done my best, and sometimes God doesn't put things in the cards for you," Smith said. "I was always prepared, I was always ready, and I always gave everything I had to my teammates, and I believe that because I've strived and continued to get better, the opportunity has arose."

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold suffered 'significant' high ankle sprain, with IR move possible

ESPN

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers expect to be without backup quarterback Sam Darnold for an extended period of time with what coach Matt Rhule described as a "significant" high ankle sprain suffered in Friday night's preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills.

The typical recovery time is four to six weeks.

"It is a significant injury that could take some time," Rhule said Saturday. "If it's at least a four-game injury, we can put him on the short-term injured reserve."

Carolina might also have lost kicker Zane Gonzalez for the season with what Rhule described as a "significant, long-term" groin injury that he suffered while warming up on the sideline. General manager Scott Fitterer and special teams coordinator Chris Tabor already are looking for a replacement.

"We have to attack that," Rhule said. "That's a major thing for us."

Darnold underwent an MRI on Saturday and the team is seeking further opinions to determine the exact severity of the injury as it decides whether to place him on injured reserve. Darnold has to be on the 53-man roster that will be set Tuesday to be eligible for return from injured reserve.

The injury leaves the Panthers with two quarterbacks, starter Baker Mayfield and former XFL starter P.J. Walker, on the roster heading into the Sept. 11 opener against the Cleveland Browns.

Rhule said he is confident that Walker, who is 2-0 as a starter the past two seasons, can back up Mayfield while Darnold recovers. Rhule said offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo and quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan were "really pleased" with the way Walker played Friday after a rough outing the week before at New England.

Walker completed 8 of 10 passes for 50 yards and no turnovers after having two interceptions and a fumble recovered for a touchdown against the Patriots.

"When he's out there, guys play," Rhule said.

Darnold suffered his injury in the third quarter when he was hit from behind by Bills defensive tackle C.J. Brewer while scrambling to his right to throw the ball away. Replay showed that Brewer rolled over Darnold's left ankle.

It was the second time in a week that the Panthers lost a quarterback in a preseason game. Third-round pick Matt Corral suffered a season-ending Lisfranc tear against New England.

The Panthers had planned to keep three quarterbacks, with Corral expected to be the third behind Mayfield and Darnold. Corral's injury changed the mindset to keeping two, but Darnold's injury forces another adjustment.

Meanwhile, Mayfield looked solid in his final tuneup before facing his former team in the opener. He completed 9 of 15 passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns, all against Buffalo's second-string defense.

Mayfield finished the preseason 13-for-22 for 134 yards and two touchdowns.

"He protected the ball, kept the ball out of harm's way," Rhule said. "At the same time, he was not afraid to make aggressive throws."

Mayfield said he feels "great about this team" heading into the opener.

"I feel great about the guys up front and the weapons we have at the skill positions, and we haven't been out there as a complete unit yet," he said.

Running back Christian McCaffrey didn't play in any of the three preseason games to ensure a player who has missed 23 of his past 33 regular-season games entered the season healthy.

"I'm 100 percent confident in this group that we have going forward," Mayfield said.

Buffalo Bills release punter Matt Araiza in wake of gang-rape lawsuit

ESPN

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Bills released punter Matt Araiza two days after a civil lawsuit was filed alleging he and two of his former San Diego State teammates gang raped a minor. All three are accused of rape, gender violence and false imprisonment.

"This is bigger than football," Bills general manager Brandon Beane said Saturday night. "Let's just step back and [let Araiza] go handle this. That's what we thought was most important."

Beane said in a news conference held over two hours after practice ended in the team's fieldhouse that the decision was made to release Araiza earlier that afternoon.

Araiza was not at practice Saturday after being held out of Friday's preseason game against the Carolina Panthers. He was not on the sideline during the game or in the locker room afterward. He traveled back to Buffalo on the team plane and has not spoken with reporters since the civil suit was filed.

In a statement released during the game Friday, Araiza said, "The facts of the incident are not what they are portrayed in the lawsuit or in the press. I look forward to quickly setting the record straight."

"With the serious nature and allegations, and we just can't, we don't have the means to put all the facts together," Beane said. "There's multiple versions of what happened, and [Sean McDermott's] a football coach, I'm a GM. We don't have access to everything, and so that's more important than playing football. And so, we want Matt to focus on that."

Beane confirmed that the team got the "boulders" of what was being accused by the plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe, when the team's assistant general counsel, Kathryn D'Angelo, spoke to her lawyer, Dan Gilleon, in late July. During that call, Beane said, Gilleon "laid out some of the things that they were accusing Matt and others of."

"Doing the best we could with our resources, talking to the league, using our people to try and find information," Beane said of the team's investigation. "But ultimately, there's a lot of things that we have not pieced together even today. We're just trying to do the best we could and be thoughtful and not rush to judgment."

Gilleon told ESPN that only the one conversation was had between Jane Doe's representation and the Bills after Gilleon sent emails to different members of the team's legal representation July 30 and 31, as seen by ESPN.

Asked if Doe's words were enough for the team, Beane said they were "trying not to rush to judgment and obviously Matt's version was different and you want to give everyone as much due process as you can. Again, we're not a judge and a jury."

In a statement released Thursday, the team said it "conducted a thorough examination of this matter." Beane said Saturday that the team probably should have described the examination as "ongoing" because it wasn't completed.

The lawsuit accuses Araiza, who was 21 at the time, of having sex with a then-17-year-old high school senior, who was under the age of consent in California, outside an off-campus party held at his residence in the early morning of Oct. 17, 2021. The suit states that Araiza then took her inside the home, where at least three other men, including the other two defendants named in the suit -- Zavier Leonard, a redshirt freshman with the Aztecs, and Nowlin Ewaliko, who is no longer on the team's roster -- were located and that she was repeatedly raped for about an hour and a half. The lawsuit states that nose, belly button and ear piercings were pulled out during the acts and that she was bleeding from her vagina.

Araiza's criminal attorney, Kerry Armstrong, told ESPN that his client spoke with the girl at the party but that the rape allegations are "just untrue."

In a statement, Armstrong said, "I am sure he is very upset and disappointed that his career with the Bills ended not because he played poorly, but because of false allegations leveled against him by a young lady and her attorney. I hope he is back in the NFL soon."

As far as the timing of when the Bills were informed, Beane said he could not remember if Araiza or Gilleon, Jane Doe's attorney, first told the team of the accusations. Beane said both took place around the same time.

While an initial story by the Los Angeles Times was published June 3, connecting five current or former San Diego State football players to a rape, a follow-up story including more of Doe's perspective was published July 29. Based on accounts from multiple parties, the Bills were contacted by both sides sometime after the second story was published.

Araiza was selected by the Bills in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft. Beane said they have reached out to a double-digit number of teams and "no one had anything on this" prior to the draft. Araiza received significant attention in the preseason for an 82-yard punt against the Denver Broncos.

"The Buffalo Bills had no choice but to cut their young punter after so badly botching their response to our claim," Gilleon said in a statement. "They ignored us, as though what I warned them would happen could be avoided if they just kept their heads in the sand. This is what enablers do."

A criminal investigation is ongoing into the alleged events, with the San Diego Police Department turning its investigation over to the district attorney's office as well as an investigation by San Diego State under the California State University systemwide policy.

The NFL said in a statement that it was aware of the lawsuit but declined to comment. Because the alleged rape happened before Araiza was drafted, he would not be subject to the league's personal conduct policy.

Bills owner Terry Pegula was kept updated on the situation when new information came up, but Beane said that Kim Pegula, who has not been in public around the team and whose role is unclear since a health issue was first shared June 14, was not consulted.

The Bills released Matt Haack, the team's punter in 2021, on Monday and had given Araiza the job for the 2022 season. The team has no punters on the roster. Quarterback Matt Barkley punted four times for the Bills against the Panthers.

"That's a tough one. You can second-guess whether that was the right move," Beane said on the satisfaction with the information gathered on Araiza for the team to release Haack. "We'll definitely look at that going forward if this situation or similar situation happens."

Haack signed with the Indianapolis Colts last week.

Lifelong Raiders fan expecting disappointment this season.

Did they look good in the preseason? Yes they did. Will something go horribly wrong during the regular season? Probably.
